Pebble Bed Reactor MOU Between China and South Africa
Just a couple of days ago, I broke one of my normal blogging rules and published a press release in its entirety . It was a good one that contained important information about low dose radiation that is useful to Atomic Insights readers, so I figured it was not a matter of me just being lazy and filling the space with content provided by someone else. This morning, I received another press release...

More Completely Unfounded CCS Assertions from "Energy Experts"
The Guardian UK Observer has an article in the February 15, 2008 edition titled Coal at centre of fierce new climate battle . According to this article, some energy "experts" believe that countries like China and India are destined to burn coal in ever increasing quantities simply because it exists. But last week British energy experts warned that a system of carbon taxes had little chance...

China Announces 6 GW of New Nuclear Will Cost 10.2 Billion ($1,700 per kilowatt)
China has announced the start of construction for 6 new nuclear reactors on a site in Yangjiang City, Guangdong province. Each plant will produce 1,000 MW of electrical power (1 GWe). The total cost for the 6 reactor project is expected to be $10.2 billion. The announcement, when added to others means that China plans to start projects for a total of 10 new reactors in the months of November and December...

China May Expand Nuclear Plan to 70 GWe
Last winter, China learned a powerful lesson about the limitations of a heavy dependence on coal fired power . Even in a country where economic expansion takes a back seat to concerns about clean air and where there are huge deposits of the fuel with no near term risk of running out, there are some challenges. Coal transportation imposes a heavy burden on rail and road systems and it is so bulky that...

Gas lines are back - in China
As a child of the 1970s, I vividly remember waiting in gas lines during the 1974 Arab Oil Embargo - in my Dad's car - and during the 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis induced gasoline shortage. That second time was when I was in my second year at the Naval Academy and I was living about 40 miles away from my new girlfriend. She was worth the wait - we have been married since 1981. Recently, fears over...

China breaks ground on world's first Westinghouse AP1000
Chinaview.cn published a story on February 26, 2008 titled China starts excavation for world's first 3rd-generation nuclear plant . The plant is the first of four reactors whose order was initially announced in December, 2006 . At the time, Steve Tritch, who was serving as Westinghouse president described the Chinese position during the negotiations as "very demanding". Based on the way...
