PBMR Status Update - Memorandum of Understanding With Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI)
Over the past several days, I have read a series of somewhat troubling and negative articles about the PBMR project in South Africa . There is pressure from the government and discussion about whether or not the large project, which employs about 750 scientists, engineers and technicians , will continue to be funded. There is good reason for concern - the project has been in existence for about 15...

PBMR Update - Green Light Given to Graphite Production at SGL Carbon
I have been publishing Atomic Insights since 1995 and have not yet published a press release article. I am going to break that string today. A few minutes ago, I received the following from Tom Ferreira - PBMR Corporate Communications. It is interesting enough to publish directly without editing: Production of graphite feedstock for the PBMR Demonstration Power Plant on track Production of graphite...

Call for translation assistance
I have a Google Alert set to inform me whenever there is a news article that includes the string PBMR - which is a unique string that means someone is talking about Pebble Bed Modular Reactors. For the last couple of days, I have been frustrated by the fact that all of the articles returned to me in that daily search have been written in a language that I cannot understand. Here are the links. If you...

DSC, Mitsubishi, PBMR, Toshiba, Shaw Group, Italy
Strange blog post title today. I have been having some difficulty juggling a number of activities recently, and I find that I have missed commenting on a several recent events and updates associated with the NuClear renaissance. One of my activities has been a continuing conversation with Adam Curry on the DSC . If you have been listening to his recent shows, you will already know that he has been...

Time for a trip - Bermuda is hosting a meeting to discuss PBMR on May 9
Bermuda is one of my favorite places of all time to visit. It is the home of pink sand beaches, the world's shortest drawbridge, a great Maritime Museum, fantastic restaurants, and interesting window shopping. I have been blessed with four visits to the island, three times via sailboats and once via a cruise ship. My last two visits to the island came after I began thinking about how much small...

Rethinking Nuclear Power
Robert Hargraves, the man behind the Pebble Bed Reactor Blog , has been putting a lot of time and energy into developing an adult continuing education course for Dartmouth College's ILEAD program. The course is titled Energy Policy and Environmental Choices: Rethinking Nuclear Power . Bob started teaching the course last week and will be posting his curriculum materials on the web after each class...

Valli Moosa - another environmentalist for nuclear power
Under the headline Anger over Valli accolade on the Mail and Guardian - out of South Africa - web site , I found an article about the head of a major environmental group named the World Conservation Union (IUCN) who is also a strong backer of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR). Valli Moosa, chairperson of the Eskom board and former environment minister, had earned a place on a recently created list...

PBMR Update on Idaho Samizdat
Dan Yurman over at Idaho Samizdat: Nuke Notes has published a detailed update on the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor project out of South Africa. The disappointing news is that the projected cost of the plants is quite a bit higher now than it was when I first started following this development in the mid 1990s. According to Dan, the most recent budgetary estimates add up to a cost per kilowatt capacity...
