Greenpeace takes on Areva
The anti-nuclear group wants to stop the next EPR to be built in France In a long article , over 800 words, the New York Times brought two of its reporters to bear on the issue of whether the Areva 1,600 MW EPR reactor produces spent nuclear fuel that is literally too hot to handle. The article is a perfect example of how an aggressive anti-nuclear activist organization can successfully...

Areva's double trouble with EPRs
Delays at Olkiluoto and Flamanville hit the bottom line Reuters reports that French nuclear giant Areva will have to take a significant charge against earnings due to increases in the cost of its EPR under construction at the Olkiluoto site in Finland. At the same time Platts reports that the new nuclear power plant under construction at Flamanville in France, also an EPR, is nine months behind schedule...

Areva's EPR for Finland will be late
Start-up delayed from 2009 to 2011 Reuters reports the Areva EPR being built in Finland will come on line two years late. French nuclear group Areva and Germany's Siemens are building the Olkiluoto 3 reactor on Finland's west coast. It is the first new reactor to be built in Europe in more than a decade. Progress with the plant is being closely watched by European Union member states who are...

Areva files EPR for NRC design certification
Constellation's Calvert Cliffs site will be first in line for the 1,600 MWe reactor Saying it had reached a major nuclear-industry milestone through work done mostly in Lynchburg, VA, AREVA asked the NRC this week to approve its design for a new reactor. It’s the first step in what AREVA hopes will be an eight-year process. It expects a reactor will be built and operating by 2015. The application...

Areva's Flamanville EPR build is underway
Areva's EPR costs per Kw are higher than GE-Hitachi's at NRG French utility EDF said this week it started building the nuclear block of its first 1,650-megawatt new generation reactor in Flamanville. Work at Flamanville in northwest France is expected to last for another four and a half years with the E$3.6 billion plant scheduled to start production in 2012, EDF said. EDFs costs for Flamanville...
