Only a truly bankrupt society would spend billions to throw away nuclear fuel. But of course it goes hand in hand with building a nuclear industry based on a reactor design that requires 5 tons of uranium be mined to make 1 ton of uranium fuel. Yucca Mountain was the gutless solution for dealing with spent fuel because no one in the industry has a spine and is willing to state the obvious, that fission products need to be separated from uranium so that their disposal only poses a few hundred year hazard as opposed to a milliions of year hazard.

If you want wind energy and it costs $ 0.10 per KwH, that's what you pay and that's where the money is invested. If you choose nuclear and the true cost, based on Frances costs and not the Houston power $12 B plant is $0.04 per KwH, that's what you pay and that's where the money is invested. We'll see how many people want to pay for 'alternative' energy.

Inside a warm damp cave completely sealed off from the outside world could life flourish indefinitely?

Answer: No life forms could flourish indefinitely. In an isolated system, entropy always increases. Life tries to push entropy in the opposite direction. When life is created, entropy decreases in the cave but nature demands a greater entropy increase offset. The cave, being sealed, would mean that entropy would reach its max, thus energy necessary to sustain and generate new life would be unavailable. Maybe we should learn a lesson from this. Available energy is mandatory. Wealth may equate to available energy. If you want to live in a nation that is prospering make sure that its available energy supply is abundant.

Entropy is one of "Physics Foibles". Look it up.
