Seeking To Fill A Power Gap, Yemen Looks To Atomic Power

Yemeni Science Advisor insists on nuclear power to tackle energy shortages

 - By Mark McFadden -

Advisor to President for Science and Technology Affairs Mohammed al Hada has confirmed that the setting up of a nuclear power project has become essential to solve energy problems in Yemen.  Al Hada's statement was made after his participation in an international workshop on the nuclear science and its peaceful applications which was organized by the University of Cairo for three days.

On the fringes of the workshop, al-Hada discussed with Egyptian officials the possibility of lying bases for establishing a scientific partnership in the nuclear area between the Yemeni and Egyptian universities. He suggested the two countries should have partnership in nuclear science curricula in an effort to lay bases for operating nuclear plants to produce energy in the future.

Al-Hada also discussed with British and French experts, who took part in the workshop, possible assistance Britain and France may provide for Yemen to train Yemeni cadres in this regard. This comes in a time Yemen is making major efforts preparing its cadres and providing suitable infrastructure to produce energy with nuclear power as well as using nuclear power in areas such as medicine, agriculture and water desalination.
