AREVA DZ LLC has announced a five-year exclusive alliance with the Tennessee Valley Authority to provide a wide range of specialized services to the TVA fleet of nuclear power plants.
Under the terms of the agreement, AREVA DZ, a joint venture between AREVA and Day & Zimmermann, will provide boiling water reactor (BWR) and pressurized water reactor (PWR) refueling services, outage optimization, specialized non-destructive examination services, parts and materials and PWR refueling tool maintenance and steam generator services for the TVA fleet.
“This alliance is a natural extension of both AREVA and Day & Zimmermann’s relationships with TVA,” said Gary Mignogna, President of AREVA DZ. “AREVA DZ has the opportunity to provide our global technologies and service solutions in a partnership with TVA to ensure their plants operate as safely and efficiently as possible in providing electricity to more than three million homes in the Tennessee Valley. AREVA DZ’s expertise and proven methodologies with extensive global resources will be applied to achieve TVA's goals of improved reliability, safety, and performance. The outcome will become a model for U.S. nuclear industry service."
The TVA nuclear power plants included in the agreement are Browns Ferry – a 3-unit BWR facility located near Athens, Alabama; Sequoyah – a 2-unit PWR plant located in Soddy-Daisy, Tenn; and Watts Bar – a single-unit PWR plant located near Spring City, Tenn. A second Watts Bar unit, currently under construction, also will be included when it goes online.
Together, these three sites contribute about 6,900 megawatts of electricity – or roughly 30 percent of TVA’s total power supply.
TVA is the nation’s largest public power provider and is completely self-financing. TVA provides power to large industries and 158 power distributors that serve approximately 9 million consumers in seven southeastern states. TVA also creates economic development opportunities and manages the Tennessee River and its tributaries to provide multiple benefits, including flood damage reduction, navigation, water quality and recreation.
