Prime Minister: Kenya Plans Nuclear Plant In Next Five Years

We want to establish a nuclear plant. We want to start with a plant of the average of between 1,000 and 2,000 Megawatts

 - By April Murelio -

According to a report by AFP, Kenya hopes to build its first nuclear power plant in the next five years with help from France, Prime Minister Raila Odinga said on Saturday.

"We want to establish a nuclear plant. We want to start with a plant of the average of between 1,000 and 2,000 Megawatts (output) and we are looking at five years from now," Odinga said in an interview with AFP.

Odinga said nuclear power was one option Kenya was considering as it looked for ways to lower its greenhouse gas emissions.

"We want to begin the cooperation right now so we can begin the training of personnel who will man this plant in the future, and France has offered to cooperate in that scheme of things," he said.

France was more experienced in nuclear power than many other nations, Odinga said, as nearly 80% of the country's energy is nuclear-generated, and Kenya hoped to draw on this expertise.

I am a retired engineer who spent many years in the nuclear business. I also have also spent about a third of my time in Kenya over the last five years.

This is a terrible, terrible idea.  Kenya can't maintain their roads.  They can't maintain their rail system.  Contractors collude with corrupt government officials so that nothing gets built properly.  Apply all this to a nuclear plant and you have a disaster in the making.

I am Kenyan citizen,a university student in jomo kenyatta university  and i know 100% this is the way to go.Even the poor management and corruption in the past.I know the government is determined to do this properly.

This is a good idea that should be supported by all Kenyans, because there has been a steady increase in power consumption especially with the rural electrification program. Also this crucial for the vision 2030 achievement. From my own perspective this is development.
