Energy Industry Trends Include Safer Nuclear and Deepwater Production says Plunkett Research

Trends to watch for the near term include development of dozens of new, safer nuclear plants in China, India, and eventually the U.S.

 - By Stephen Heiser -

Plunkett Research Ltd.’s newest market research and competitive analysis, report Plunkett’s Energy Industry Almanac, 2010 edition, covers everything from major oil companies to electric and gas utilities, plus pipelines, refiners, retailers, oil field services and engineering.

According to Jack W. Plunkett, CEO of Plunkett Research, Ltd., “Trends to watch for the near term include development of dozens of new, safer nuclear plants in China, India, and eventually the U.S. Despite the $6 to $12 billion investment per plant, development will move forward.”

Major trends shaping the energy industry include:

  • The industry takes a new look at nuclear power—Westinghouse and other firms are writing massive new plant contracts based on new technologies.
  • Energy demand climbs in India and China/Nuclear, hydro and gas projects grow.
  • The U.S. electric grid needs retooling. Government stimulus will assist the installation of newer technologies.
  • Superconductivity comes of age, promising very high efficiency in electricity distribution.
  • Shale Gas is abundant and new fields will continue to be brought online.
  • Demand for natural gas leads to massive new pipeline projects in the U.S., Canada, Europe and China.
  • Floating LNG plants may change the industry. Meanwhile, so much money has been invested in LNG worldwide that there is a supply glut.
  • Brazil and West Africa play increasingly important roles, as deepwater offshore wells continue to tap massive reservoirs.
  • Canada’s oil sands production reaches 1.3 million barrels per day, but operating costs are high.
  • Conservation and alternative energy lead to technology investment and innovation.

This extensive and easy-to-use collection, full of rich data detailing the past, present and future of the energy sector, is a valuable source of information.

A complete industry trends and statistics analysis is provided in Plunkett’s Energy Industry Almanac, 2010 edition.
