Westinghouse will co-lead and participate in the 5th Annual U.S. Commercial Nuclear Trade Mission to India that has been organized by the U.S.-India Business Council, U.S. Commercial Service, and Nuclear Energy Institute. The U.S. Nuclear Trade Mission takes place in Delhi and Mumbai on December 6-11, 2009.
Westinghouse is represented by Ms. Meena Mutyala, vice president of Global Growth and Business Leader, India. She is joined by two members of the Westinghouse India team - Mr. Robert Pearce and Mr. Ramesh Deshpande. Ms. Mutyala is serving as the co-lead of the trade mission that includes over 50 executives from across the commercial nuclear industry in the U.S.
"Westinghouse is very encouraged by the progress it has made in India while awaiting the resolution of the remaining policy issues between the two governments," said Ms. Mutyala. "Westinghouse is committed to stay the course and work with governments and private organizations to meet India's needs for nuclear power. We are very encouraged by India's announcement of sites for U.S. companies. We are also encouraged by President Obama's statement on November 24th that his administration is fully committed to implementing the U.S.-India civil nuclear agreement which will create jobs in both countries."
The Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant is ideally suited to the market in India. The AP1000 is becoming the technology of choice for several global new plant projects. Four AP1000s are under contract in China, with the first scheduled to become operational in 2013. In the U.S., Westinghouse and its construction partners have contracts for six AP1000 reactors, and the AP1000 has been announced the technology of choice for 8 other reactors under consideration.
In addition to providing AP1000 reactors to India, Westinghouse also views Indian organizations as potential partners for equipment sourcing, engineering and development. Westinghouse believes that there can be a mutual "win-win" approach of providing its reactors to India and leveraging India's capabilities for the global nuclear industry.
Westinghouse Electric Company provided the world's first pressurized water reactor in 1957. Since then, the company has continued to make the investments necessary to maintain both technological and market leadership positions within the commercial nuclear power industry. Today, well over 40 percent of the world's operating commercial nuclear power plants were provided either directly by Westinghouse or its licensees, giving Westinghouse the world's largest installed base of operating plants.
