Statement By FPL CEO Lew Hay On Copenhagen Climate Talks

I commend President Obama for showing real leadership in the effort to mitigate global carbon emissions

 - By April Murelio -

Lew Hay, chairman and CEO of FPL Group, the nation’s No. 1 producer of renewable energy from wind and solar power, issued the following statement today on the recently concluded international climate talks held in Copenhagen, Denmark:

"I commend President Obama for showing real leadership in the effort to mitigate global carbon emissions. Copenhagen represents one step of many toward an ultimate goal. With the summit's conclusion, we can now focus on the policy changes we need to make here at home. The Environmental Protection Agency is going to regulate greenhouse gas emissions whether there’s an international agreement or not. We think legislative action is far superior; so does the Administration. The House of Representatives has already acted. Now, we need the Senate to act. The bottom line is this: Taking action to address carbon emissions will generate clean-energy jobs, strengthen our energy independence and improve the environment. If we cling to the failed policies of the past, we’ll fall behind in clean energy, remain overly dependent on foreign sources of fuel and further damage the environment.”

FPL Group, Inc. (NYSE: FPL) is a leading clean energy company with 2008 revenues of more than $16 billion, approximately 39,000 megawatts of generating capacity, and more than 15,000 employees in 27 states and Canada. Headquartered in Juno Beach, Fla., FPL Group’s principal subsidiaries are NextEra Energy Resources, LLC, the largest generator in North America of renewable energy from the wind and sun, and Florida Power & Light Company, which serves 4.5 million customer accounts in Florida and is one of the largest rate-regulated electric utilities in the country. Through its subsidiaries, FPL Group collectively operates the third largest U.S. nuclear power generation fleet. Delighted to see such an enlightened position by the CEO of the company that supplies most of my energy needs. The sun supplies the rest through the solar water heating system that I installed myself (age 68).
