Areva into solar now
France's nuclear company Areva is to launch a solar power business on the basis of the acquisition of US-based Ausra, a specialist in concentrated solar power. The move "reflects Areva's strategic objective to be the world leader in concentrated solar power and will further strengthen and diversify its renewables portfolio," said the company. The move comes after last month's reorganisation, which separated renewables activities from the nuclear reactor business, and the acquisition of a 30% stake in German wind technology specialist Repower two years ago.

Berkeley free to negotiate on Spanish U
Berkeley Resources, the Australian company looking to resurrect uranium mining at various deposits in Spain, has freed itself to negotiate offtake and marketing rights with other parties by terminating a tentative deal with French company Areva. Berkeley and Areva had entered into the Heads of Agreement - a non-binding document setting out the main issues relevant to a tentative partnership agreement - in 2006. Termination of the agreement also ends any rights previously granted to Areva for offtake or marketing of uranium from Berkeley's projects, leaving Berkeley free to negotiate with other parties. Offtake and marketing rights could be an important element of future project financing for Berkeley, which recently announced a feasibility study into the possible restart of mining at several Spanish deposits. In an announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange, Berkeley said that it understands that Areva is planning to exercise its Berkeley options and dispose of its entire holding shares in the company, potentially contributing over A$7 million ($6.4 million) to Berkeley's cash position.

Raided Happy Ranger reaches Rauma
[ Agence France Presse, 18 November ] The Happy Ranger cargo ship, which is transporting steam generators from France to Finland for use in the Areva EPR under construction at Olkiluoto, has docked at the Finnish port of Rauma. Also on board were eight Greenpeace protesters who boarded the ship during its voyage in protest of the shipment. Six protesters climbed aboard the vessel on 16 November as it passed through the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, while another four boarded the following day. However, two of the protesters later left the ship when it was in Swedish waters. The ship's captain agreed to allow the protesters to remain on board if they stayed in a visible location on deck. The protesters spent two rather cold and wet nights on the ship before it reached its destination. In a statement, Finnish police reported, "The activists have left the ship on the authorities' request." One of the protesters, Mai Kivelae, commented: "We left the ship after authorities said we would not be accused of anything."

Trio of bids for Areva T&D division
Areva announced that it had received three binding bids for its transmission and distribution (T&D) division by the 9 November deadline. The company said that it had received a joint bid from France's Alstom and Schneider Electric, a bid from General Electric (GE) of the USA, and a joint bid from Toshiba and Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ). Areva said that it is now assessing these offers. The T&D division supplies products, systems and services dedicated to electricity transmission and distribution from the power plant to the final user. The division's customers are electric utilities as well as the oil, mining and metals, wind energy, paper and glass, transportation, and power engineering industries. At the end of June, Areva's supervisory board asked the executive board to put the division up for sale to partly finance the group's long-term development plan. Areva had said that a final decision on whether or not to sell the division and the choice of potential buyer will be taken before the end of 2009. The sale of its T&D division would leave Areva focused entirely on the nuclear power industry, with operations in uranium mining, conversion and enrichment; fuel design and fabrication; reactor design and construction; and decommissioning and waste disposal.
