Areva finalises Bakouma
[Reuters, 2 August] Production at the Bakouma mine in the Central African Republic (CAR) should start in 2010, after the end of difficult negotiations over the uranium deposit. The CAR government had been unhappy about Areva gaining the mining concession with its purchase of UraMin about a year ago. A $43 million deal to realise the mining venture was signed on 1 August by Areva CEO Anne Lauvergeon and CAR President Francois Bozize which would see the country gain 12% of production revenues as well as 1000 new jobs and new health and electricity infrastructure. Lauvergeon said it was a "win-win" deal and that production would peak at around 1200 tonnes of uranium per year in 2012-13.

French uranium employees kidnapped in Niger
French nuclear company Areva is working with authorities in France and Niger to liberate four of its expatriate employees kidnapped by Tuareg rebels in Niger's Arlit region. Areva confirmed that the four kidnapped employees were in good health and had been able to contact the company. Local press reports have added that the ethnic Tuareg group the Movement of the People of Niger for Justice (MNJ) took the four French employees while they were out jogging in the centre of the town of Arlit, and the group – three men and a woman – include the group's local operations director and a geologist. MNJ has targeted employees of uranium companies before. In 2007 the group kidnapped a Chinese executive from a uranium prospecting company releasing him several days later. A few months earlier, it attacked the Imouraren uranium mine in north Niger, which is operated by Areva. The MNJ claims to be fighting for greater benefits from uranium mining for the inhabitants of northern Niger.

Areva wins €45 million contract with Eletronuclear
Areva has been awarded six contracts to provide key services to Eletronuclear, the Brazilian operator of the Angra nuclear power plant. Worth €45 million ($69 million), the contracts focus on Angra 2 and vary in duration from three to five years. The Angra site, near Angra dos Reis, Brazil, currently hosts two pressurized water reactors (PWRs), Angra 1 and 2, with plans for a third under discussion. Angra 2 connected to the grid in 2000. Areva, which already provides services for both Angra units, is contracted to carry out examination and maintenance operations as well as servicing in the field of electrical and control engineering. An extensive, non-destructive examination will be made of steam generators, control rods, and the integrity of the containment. The French company will also carry out comprehensive maintenance operations throughout the site, attending to the cooling pool floor, fuel assemblies, valves, drives pumps and motors. Steam generator cleaning will be carried out at a secondary site with Areva supplying a local support team.
