  • New turbines for Exelon plants

US utility Exelon is upgrading steam turbines at six of its nuclear power units. The $420 million project should result in about 240 MWe more power across the six units, which have all had 20-year extensions to the operating licenses.
  • Major French-US nuclear power link

Electricite de France (EdF) and Exelon have signed a 5-year agreement to cooperate on managerial and technical matters, such as outage management, fuel operations and equipment reliability. It specifically excludes "any joint venture or new build effort."
  • Nuclear plants 'not affected' by US earthquake

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 that occurred in the US state of Illinois had no serious affect on nuclear power plants. A spokesman from Exelon said there had been no damage to its 11 reactors in the state, which operated normally throughout.
  • Exelon selects Texan site for COL application

Exelon has selected a site some 20 miles (32 km) south of Victoria in Victoria County, Texas, as the site for a combined construction and operating licence (COL) application for a new nuclear power plant, the company announced on 18 December. Exelon said in June that two sites in Texas were under consideration for the COL application. The other site was about ten miles (16 km) south of Collegeport in Matagorda County. The company said, "After conducting in-depth field investigations and research at both locations as part of the company's site selection process, Victoria County was identified as the site best suited to satisfy NRC requirements as well as other federal and state laws and regulations." Exelon expects to submit the COL application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in September 2008. The company anticipates the application to cost some $23 million. In November, Exelon selected GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy's Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) as its chosen reactor should it go ahead with building a new nuclear plant in Texas.
  • Exelon to replace security force at nuclear plants

Exelon Nuclear will replace the security force provided by Wackenhut Nuclear Services with its own in-house team. In September it was reported that Wackenhut guards were found sleeping whilst on duty.
  • Exelon contracts at both ends of reactor life

Exelon Nuclear has signed a contract which should see decommissioning of its shut-down Zion power station completed a decade early. It has also signed a major order for heavy forgings and components for two new reactors it is considering building in Texas.
