Reactors operating normally after Iwate earthquake
Three nuclear power plants are operating normally after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the prefecture of Iwate, northern Japan. The Onagawa and Higashidori nuclear plants were unaffected by the quake, according to an official from the Tohoku Electric Power Co. At the Fukushima Daini plant, operated by TEPCO, there was a small spillage of weakly radioactive water from a storage pool in a warehouse used to store waste. The spillage was contained within the facilty and there has been no impact on the environment, according to a spokesman at the plant.

Japan and Kazakhstan to strengthen cooperation
[Reuters, 5 May] Japan and Kazakhstan have agreed to increase cooperation in uranium mining and nuclear energy. Kanae Yamamoto, Japan's parliamentary secretary for economy, trade and industry, speaking to reporters during a visit to the Kazakh capital Astana, said: "We have signed a memorandum saying Japan and Kazakhstan will further strengthen cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy." She noted that production at Western Mynkuduk, the first Kazakh uranium deposit to be developed with Japanese company investment, would start in June, while the second joint project, the Khorasan deposit, will start later. Yamamoto said that "annual output will be 5000 tonnes (of uranium ore) at Khorasan and 1000 tonnes at Western Mynkuduk." She did not disclose how much the Japanese had invested in Kazakh projects. In 2007, Kazatomprom signed a deal with Japanese companies, Kansai Electric Power Co, Sumitomo Corp and Nuclear Fuel Industries Ltd to supply fuel for Kansai's nuclear power plants.

Higashidori-1 NPS delays reported
[Nikkei: 5 January] TEPCO will postponed plans for construction of the Higashidori-1 NPS by one year, according to Japanese business daily Nikkei. Construction was due to start in December 2008. With the delay, necessitated by more stringent safety requirements introduced after the earthquake at the Kashiwaziak-Karima plant, the Higashidori plant is expected to be operational in fiscal year 2015/16. The specifications of the Higashidori-1 NPS were intended to be the same as the Kashiwazaki-Karima-6 and -7 reactors, although improved thermal efficiency would result in slightly increased output.
