High-level waste returned to Japan
The first consignment of solid high-level waste belonging to Sellafield's Japanese customers has safely arrived in Japan from the UK following a journey by ship of over six weeks. The waste arose from the reprocessing of those customers' used nuclear fuel at Sellafield.

Monju moves closer to restart
The Monju prototype fast reactor (FBR) in Japan has completed a government-mandated procedure to ensure the reactor is safe to restart following a sodium coolant leak which forced it out of action almost 15 years ago. It could restart as early as next month.

Full power for Japan's first MOX burner
Japan's first ever nuclear power reactor to use mixed oxide (MOX) fuel assemblies is now operating at full capacity, fuel supplier Areva has announced. Kyushu's Genkai 3 was loaded with the fuel fabricated from uranium and the plutonium recovered from previously used nuclear fuel in October. It was restarted in early November, gradually increasing output until normal operation was achieved on 2 December. Recycling of plutonium in MOX is to play a key role in Japan's future nuclear fuel cycle, and two other utilities - Shikoku Electric Power Co and Chubu Electric Power Co – plan to introduce MOX fuel into their reactors in or after 2010. Areva's executive vice president of recycling, Jean-Pierre Gros, said the company was "proud to contribute to provide electricity to Japanese citizens for the first time through recyclable fuel MOX which demonstrates its safe, reliable and sustainable energy."

Earthquake-hit unit gets OK for full output
[Reuters, 1 June] Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) has been given approval by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to raise output at unit 7 of its Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant to 100% as part of a test run. The 1315 MWe Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) was restarted on 9 May after almost 22 months of checks and repairs following the 6.8 magnitude Niigata Chuetsu offshore earthquake of 16 July 2007. Tepco had gradually increased power output at the reactor, reaching 75% on 31 May. Unit 7 is the first of the plant's seven reactors to be restarted - the others are still undergoing checks and repairs.
