Jordan and Canada sign cooperation agreement
Jordan and Canada signed a cooperation agreement on 17 February covering the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the Jordan's Petra news agency reported. The agreement was signed in Amman by Khalid Touqan, president of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) and Canada's ambassador to Jordan Margaret Huber. Under the agreement, Canada will help Jordan construct a nuclear power plant to generate electricity and desalinate seawater. Touqan commented, "The Jordanian nuclear program is progressing steadily in steps." The signing of the cooperation agreement follows the signing in July 2008 of a memorandum of understanding between the JAEC and SNC-Lavalin and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL). Jordan has already signed similar cooperation agreements with France, China and South Korea.

Low oil prices could harm future energy supplies
Energy leaders at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Switzerland, have debated whether low oil prices could slow investment in new fossil fuel supplies, as well as in alternative energy supplies. The head of EdF suggested now is the time to invest in nuclear energy.

Rehn: 'Prominent' role for nuclear in EU
[Reuters, 28 November] Nuclear power will play a key role in helping the European Union (EU) cut its dependence on fossil fuels and secure future energy supplies, the EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn told a conference in Finland. He said, "Nuclear energy will have a prominent role in leading the EU towards a low-carbon society." Rehn added, "The role of nuclear energy will be essential to strengthen the Union's energy security after 2020." Commenting on the EU plan to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2020, he said: "EU energy policy cannot perform miracles … Even after the implementation of the climate and energy policies, the EU's net imports of fossil fuels are still expected to stay roughly at today's levels."

Croatia considers nuclear energy option
[BBC Monitoring, 10 November] According to a report on Croatia's HRT1 TV, the country will soon make a decision on whether to construct a nuclear power plant. Just three weeks ago, the prime minister, Ivo Sanader, said that the government had examined several energy options and preferred those not involving nuclear power plants. He added "We are open for a public debate and if the public shows that we need a different option, we are open for dialogue." However, at a recent presentation of the draft energy strategy, deputy prime minister Damir Polancec said that the scenario involving the construction of a 1000 MWe nuclear power plant, together with a 600 MWe coal-fired plant, "was assessed as the most favourable one by the experts." Croatia proposes spending €10 billion ($13 billion) in its energy sector over the next 12 years, including the construction of some 3500 MW of new generating capacity. A public debate on the country's energy strategy will end in about one month. Croatia co-owns the Krsko nuclear power plant in Slovenia.
