Progress Energy has submitted an application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a combined construction and operating licence (COL) for a potential new nuclear power plant in Levy County, Florida.

US awards waste contract; Progress wins back costs
Progress Energy has been awarded $82.8 million to cover used fuel management costs incurred as a result of the government's failure to provide used fuel management. Meanwhile, contracts have been awarded for waste storage canisters for the Yucca Mountain repository. Legal rulings on waste have also been made in Washington and Texas.

Moves for more nuclear in Florida
Progress Energy has submitted a filing to the Florida State and Public Services Commission on its proposal to build a new nuclear power plant at a new site in Levy County. Meanwhile, the commission has accepted the need for new nuclear units at Florida Power & Light's Turkey Point plant.
