  • 'Nuclear' city athletes win silver for Russia

The head of Rosatom, Sergei Kiriyenko, has congratulated two athletes from the Russian 'nuclear' city of Novouralsk near Yekaterinburg in the Urals for winning a silver medal as part of the men's 4x200 metres freestyle relay in the Beijing Olympics. At the same time, the team also set a new European record. In a telegram to Danila Izotov and Alexander Sukhorukov, Kiriyenko said that their victory not only gave Russia its fifth silver medal in the games, but was also a present for all Russian nuclear workers. He said, "Novouralsk is a small city and its residents, most of whom work at Ural Electrochemical Integrated Plant (UEIP), are happy that their city has given birth to such outstanding sportsmen. The whole of our nuclear industry is proud of you." Russia's largest uranium enrichment plant operates at UEIP.
  • Russian civil nuclear reorganisation proceeds

Russia has announced that its nuclear power generation organisation has been reconstituted and renamed. Rosenergoatom becomes simply Energoatom.
  • Russia relocates construction of floating power plant

The Russian government has approved a decision by Rosatom to cancel the general contract with Sevmash for the construction of the first floating nuclear power plant and to move production to Baltiysky Zavod.
  • Russia aims to be 'global player'

[Nuclear.Ru, 6 August] Russia's Ministry for Economic Development, in a draft concept of Russia’s social and economic development up to 2020 submitted to the government for preliminary review, says that state policy on nuclear power aims to develop the country's nuclear power industry into a "global player". The document says that Russia will become the "global player" in nuclear business when installed nuclear generating capacity reaches 28-36 GW by 2012-2015 and 50-53 GW by 2020, when nuclear is expected to account for 20%-22% of the country's total electricity generation. The ministry said that, from 2020, the industry will be put through a "staged transition" to technology based on fast neutron reactors and a closed nuclear fuel cycle. The industry will also gain a broader range of reactor capacities, including small- and medium-sized units. Russia also intends to export equipment and technology worth at least $8-14 billion (in 2006 prices) by 2020.
  • Italy to build ship for Russian submarine waste

Italian state-owned shipbuilder Fincantieri has been awarded a contract to build a ship for the transport of irradiated fuel and radioactive waste derived from Russian nuclear-powered submarines.
  • Russian reactor designer and constructor to merge

Russian reactor builder AtomStroyExport and design organization St Petersburg Scientific Research and Design Institute AtomEnergoProekt are to merge to boost their chances in the international nuclear reactor market.
  • Plan to construct SVBR at Obninsk

Rosatom and Russian Machines will establish a joint venture to develop a nuclear power plant employing an SVBR reactor, Nuclear.Ru reported. Vladimir Petrochenko, Russian Machines' director of power machine engineering, said the company was ready to invest some $400-$500 million in the project, under which a 100 MWe nuclear power plant would be constructed at Obninsk. The plant should be completed by 2015. Petrochenko said told Russian news agency RIA Novosti, "At present, we are in the process of signing an agreement to design and build the new reactor with Rosatom." The SVBR is modular lead-bismuth-cooled fast neutron reactor from Gidropress, derived from a design used in submarines with 70 reactor-years operational experience. It can use different nuclear fuels, including mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel.
  • Kola 1 licensed to operate until 2018

Russia's nuclear regulator, Rostekhnadzor, has issued a licence to Rosenergoatom for the extended operation of unit one of the Kola nuclear power plant. The licence is valid until 6 July 2018. In June 2003, the service life of the unit was extended for 15 years following modernisation work conducted on the reactor since 1990 and the unit was also granted a five-year operating licence. The modernisation included an assessment of the life extension effectiveness; an integrated inspection; reactor upgrades; justification of the residual life of safety-important components; replacement of some equipment; and an in-depth safety assessment of the reactor. The Kola site hosts four VVER pressurized water reactors which each output 411 MWe. Four additional 300 MWe units are proposed as phase two of the Kola plant.
  • Volgodonsk 2 set for 2009 completion

After a change of contractors, Russian officials have put forward the start-up dates of three new nuclear power reactors. Plans for southern Russia are being revised.
  • Busy week for sporting Russian workers

The fourth annual "Energy of the Baltic Sea" sports competition has been held this week at the Leningrad nuclear power plant. The competition is held between teams of workers from several nuclear power plants in western Russian (including Balakovo, Volgodonsk, Kalinin, Kola, Leningrad and Smolensk), the Nuclear Energy Institute of St Petersburg and the Yuventa youth sports club. The four-day program of events included orienteering, tree- and rock-climbing, relay racing, volleyball, football and "water tourism" (rafting, kayaking, etc). In addition, there were contests for the best greeting, the best bivouac and the best traveller's song. The contest also included quizzes on geography, science, local history and nuclear power engineering. By the end of the second day, the team from Volgodonsk were leading, having won three gold medals and a bronze. Meanwhile, a team from Rosenergoatom is competing in the "Atomiad 2008" competition which has started in Novouralsk, southern Russia. Four teams, comprising some 300 competitors, will compete for the title as best in the nuclear industry. Events will include football, volleyball, tennis, ping-pong, badminton, swimming, track and field events, darts and weightlifting. Workers from the Volgodonsk plant have, in addition, been participating in an 800 kilometer cycle ride from their plant to the Zaporizhzhya plant in Ukraine. Riders from both plants set off on 24 June and arrived in the town of Energodar, close to the Zaporizhzhya plant, on 1 July. They were welcomed by the plant's director general, the town's mayor and a brass band.
