Berkeley free to negotiate on Spanish U
Berkeley Resources, the Australian company looking to resurrect uranium mining at various deposits in Spain, has freed itself to negotiate offtake and marketing rights with other parties by terminating a tentative deal with French company Areva. Berkeley and Areva had entered into the Heads of Agreement - a non-binding document setting out the main issues relevant to a tentative partnership agreement - in 2006. Termination of the agreement also ends any rights previously granted to Areva for offtake or marketing of uranium from Berkeley's projects, leaving Berkeley free to negotiate with other parties. Offtake and marketing rights could be an important element of future project financing for Berkeley, which recently announced a feasibility study into the possible restart of mining at several Spanish deposits. In an announcement to the Australian Securities Exchange, Berkeley said that it understands that Areva is planning to exercise its Berkeley options and dispose of its entire holding shares in the company, potentially contributing over A$7 million ($6.4 million) to Berkeley's cash position.

Indian sites confirmed for US reactors
India 's cabinet has confirmed two coastal sites as being reserved for nuclear power parks of up to eight US-origin reactors each. These are at Mithi Virdi in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat state, and Kovada in Andhra Pradesh. The move was welcomed by the US-India Business Council (USIBC). Ron Somers, president of the USIBC, said: "Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat are both excellent locations. They have people who appreciate the benefits of reliable electricity supplies, and abundant human talent to erect and maintain these state-of-the-art facilities." However, the USIBC noted that "a few important steps still remain to enable full participation" by both US and Indian private sector companies. These include India's bringing into force the India-specific International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards agreement and the country's adoption of a nuclear liability law. GE Hitachi and Westinghouse are in the frame to provide a number of their ABWR or AP1000 reactors on each site. The Indian government has already confirmed that Jaitapur in Maharashtra state is reserved for six French EPR units, while Haripur in West Bengal will house up to eight Russian VVER units.
