Nuclear studies begin in Jordan
[The Jordan Times, 14 October] A feasibility study is underway towards building a nuclear power plant near Aqaba, Jordan. For three months, Belgium's Tractebel will work on the suitability of a plot of land 20 kilometres from Aqaba and about 12 kilometres from the Red Sea. If the site, said to be 450 metres above sea level, is considered suitable then environmental and geophysical studies taking 18 months will begin. Finding candidate areas in Jordan has been difficult due to the country's arid nature, with places in Eastern Badia and the north of the country already ruled out.

Jordan and Canada sign cooperation agreement
Jordan and Canada signed a cooperation agreement on 17 February covering the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the Jordan's Petra news agency reported. The agreement was signed in Amman by Khalid Touqan, president of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) and Canada's ambassador to Jordan Margaret Huber. Under the agreement, Canada will help Jordan construct a nuclear power plant to generate electricity and desalinate seawater. Touqan commented, "The Jordanian nuclear program is progressing steadily in steps." The signing of the cooperation agreement follows the signing in July 2008 of a memorandum of understanding between the JAEC and SNC-Lavalin and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL). Jordan has already signed similar cooperation agreements with France, China and South Korea.

Jordan and China sign nuclear agreements
[Petra, 25 November] Two nuclear agreements - one on the purchase of a sub-critical assembly and the other implementing an earlier draft cooperation agreement - have been signed by Jordan and China. Under the first agreement, China will supply Jordan with a sub-critical system and work to establish a training laboratory at the Jordanian University of Science and Technology, seen as essential for training nuclear engineers and academics. The second agreement is the executive protocol for the nuclear cooperation agreement signed by the two countries in August, covering mining, uranium enrichment, training and research, the construction of a research reactor and consultations on nuclear power plant construction. Jordan is poor in both energy and water resources, but has uranium deposits, and is working towards introducing nuclear energy for power and desalination. The country is currently investigating the feasibility of mining its uranium, and recently signed an agreement on joint exploration and mining activities with French company Areva. It has also signed nuclear cooperation agreements with the USA, France and UK.
