Work to build a new reactor at Fuqing, China, has been officially launched - three months ahead of schedule. Construction at various stages is now ongoing for six units at the site.

Joint venture for new Slovak nuclear plant
A shareholder agreement for a joint venture to construct a new nuclear power plant at the Bohunice site in Slovakia has been signed by Czech utility CEZ and Slovakian state-owned nuclear and decommissioning company Javys.

G8 energy ministers endorse nuclear power
Energy ministers of leading industrialized countries met in Rome, Italy, at the weekend. In a statement, they announced that they would increasingly emphasize nuclear energy and the creation of a common low-carbon technology platform as solutions to climate change and supply insecurity.

Plans to build a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania have received approval from the country's environment ministry. The decision covers a potential new nuclear plant with a capacity of up to 3400 MWe.

Next French nuclear project to include oil interest
France will start work on a second new reactor in 2012 at Penly. The new nuclear unit will be partly owned by oil and gas giant GdF-Suez. Enel and Total also look like likely investors.

Computing boost for European fusion
The Jülich Research Centre in Germany has ordered a new supercomputer which will host applications for the European Union's fusion research program. The move comes after last week's European Commission decision to allow fusion researchers access to a European supercomputer network.

Two more reactors under way in China
