Japan starts using MOX fuel
Unit 3 of the Genkai nuclear power plant was scheduled to be restarted today having been partly loaded with mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel assemblies. The move marks the first ever use of the fuel in Japan.

Areva has delivered two steam generators for unit 1 of Exelon's Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Philadelphia. It took eight weeks to transport the components from the manufacturing site in France.

NPCIL and NTPC to form joint venture
National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), India's largest power company, and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture for the construction of new nuclear power plants in India.

Low oil prices could harm future energy supplies
Energy leaders at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Switzerland, have debated whether low oil prices could slow investment in new fossil fuel supplies, as well as in alternative energy supplies. The head of EdF suggested now is the time to invest in nuclear energy.

Slovak nuclear plant to restart in days?
Slovakia is preparing the Bohunice V1 unit 2 reactor for recommissioning less than two weeks after it was closed. The plant could be restarted within days unless gas flows from Russia resume, Slovakian prime minister Robert Fico has said.

A report by the UK's independent Committee on Climate Change concludes that the economic case for new nuclear power deployment is strong and if the pace of renewable wind power should fail to meet targets the deployment of nuclear power should be accelerated to fill the gap.
