Americans wary of nuclear waste, safety issues
Almost half of Americans are in favour of new nuclear power plants being built in the USA, but the majority said they are concerned about radioactive waste management, plant safety and nuclear material falling into the wrong hands, a new public opinion poll shows.

Spanish towns bid to host waste facility
At least a dozen Spanish towns, most with populations of 500 or less, have submitted bids to host the country's centralized interim high-level waste storage facility. However, regional authorities have said they will oppose many of the bids.

Post-Yucca nuclear waste strategy group
America will develop a new strategy for long-term waste management under a 'Blue Ribbon' commission. Used nuclear fuel recycling will be one of the options on the table for the group.

High cost for US radwaste alternatives

US nuclear utilities question waste fees
US nuclear utilities have written to Energy Secretary Steven Chu asking him why they should continue paying some $770 million annually towards the Yucca Mountain waste repository since the project has now been scrapped and no alternative has yet been proposed.

Big fine for waste leaks
A leaky sump at the Bradwell nuclear power plant in the UK will cost operator Magnox South some £250,000 in fines, while court costs take the total penalty to £400,000 ($567,000).

Japco to delay Tsuruga 1 shut down
Japan Atomic Power Co (Japco) announced that it will postpone the shut down of its Tsuruga 1 nuclear power reactor beyond the originally scheduled 2010 due to delays in the construction of two new units at the site.

A step-by-step process has begun in the UK to select a site and design a single facility to store radioactive waste for ever. A white paper on the matter said that principles of "voluntarism and partnership" are to be used in the selection process.
