Russia pressures Bulgaria on Belene loan
The Bulgarian finance minister Simeon Dyankov has said that he will not authorise a state-guaranteed loan from Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom towards the financing of constructing the Belene nuclear power plant, following last week's negotiations on the deal between the two governments.

HFR shuts as Maria joins isotope supply chain
A Polish research reactor called Maria is to supply US medical company Covidien with the medical isotope molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) in a deal announced just before the Dutch High Flux Reactor (HFR) reactor shut down for major repairs.

UK reactor assessment work contract
Progress in the UK's Generic Design Assessment program is being supported by the contracting of expert consultants for the most detailed stage of analysis. Frazer Nash's role in safety evaluation will earn it £1.8 million ($2.8 million).

Quebec-New Brunswick reach energy conclusion
The Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick have concluded negotiations on an energy agreement that will see Hydro-Quebec acquire most of NB Power's generation assets including the Point Lepreau nuclear power station.

Second quake-hit unit back in operation
A second reactor has resumed commercial operation at Tokyo Electric Power Co's Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant. All seven units at the plant were shut down following a powerful earthquake in July 2007.

Restarting Belene
Bulgaria is picking up the pieces of the Belene new reactor project and will shortly select a leading consultant. Work continues at the site, and the reactor technology is not expected to be reconsidered.

UK partners for Westinghouse

South Korea seeks to boost reactor exports
South Korea aims to export 80 nuclear power reactors - worth some $400 billion - by 2030, according to the country's Ministry of Knowledge Economy. This would make South Korea the world's third largest reactor supplier with a 20% share of the global market.
