BWR Fuel Engineering – Senior Engineer / Physicist (Corporate)
In 2018, the Southern Nuclear BWR Fuel Engineering department, in collaboration with industry partners, lead the industry with the first deployment of fueled enhanced accident tolerant lead test assemblies into a commercial nuclear power plant in the world. This effort culminated in a 2018 Nuclear Energy Institute’s Top Innovative Practice Award for this team.  The BWR Fuel Engineering team offers outstanding opportunities for innovation in the realm of nuclear fuel and core design.  Additionally, in 2018, the Southern Nuclear BWR Fuel Engineering department completed an effort to bring the performance of core reload design and licensing analyses utilizing fuel supplier methods "in-house."  This permits an unprecedented level of utility ownership and technical depth in the areas of core design and reload licensing and is an excellent development opportunity for individual professional growth.
This challenging and rewarding position will be responsible for delivering engineering products for activities related to nuclear fuel and core design, licensing and operation, transient and accident analyses, and technical evaluations regarding BWR nuclear fuel and advanced nuclear fuel innovations. Additionally, this position will be called upon to provide coaching and mentoring to less experienced team members.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Engineering or Physics from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • An advanced degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field with specialties in nuclear fuel analysis is desired.
  • Degree(s) in Nuclear Engineering is preferred, but not required.
The following experience is required:
  • A minimum of four (4) years of nuclear industry work experience performing engineering calculations to support nuclear fuel analyses is required.
    The following experiences are highly desired:
  • Experience with applications of BWR reactor physics
  • Experience with BWR core design or transient analysis
  • Experience of BWR safety analysis
  • Experience with GE-Hitachi (GEH)/Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) nuclear methods
  • Experience with TRACG methods
  • Experience with CASMO/SIMULATE methods
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills. Comfortable providing and presenting information to all levels of the organization.
  • Exceptional organization skills and ability to manage complex projects with multiple work phases are required.
  • Ability to comprehend complex reactor physics/design problems and provide solutions is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in autonomous use of engineering judgement and decision making. Self-starter capable of performing tasks with little supervision or oversight.
  • Knowledge of BWR reactor physics and of fuel and core design analysis is preferred.
  • Knowledge of BWR transient or safety analysis is desired.
  • Must exhibit an exceptional degree of technical expertise, creativity, and resourcefulness.
BWR Fuel Senior Engineer responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct independent analysis to support performance of BWR transient analysis and/or BWR nuclear fuel or core design analysis with minimal supervision.
  • Effectively communicate with other technical and non-technical disciplines, site reactor engineers, and fuel suppliers.
  • Technical project management and oversight of nuclear fuel supplier's fuel/core design analysis and licensing support.
  • Technical support of nuclear fuel commercial decisions for BWR units.
  • Technical mentoring of fellow BWR Fuel Engineering team members.
