Job Description

The Reactor System Design and Analysis Division (RSD&A) establishes new standards of emerging, innovative reactor design through contributing technical expertise to unique and specific advanced nuclear reactor design and deployment initiatives.  Through collaborative efforts, RSD&A enables research, design and implementation of lab, partner and vendor initiatives.  The work of RSD&A is positioned to establish the nation as a global leader in nuclear reactor technology.

The Department Manager, Digital Reactor Design and Development will lead a team of innovators to create the next level of advanced reactor technology. As a leader in the Nuclear Science and Technology Directorate, the department manager is responsible for creating a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, inclusion, and diversity with focus toward the professional development of staff.


  • Lead the development of sensors, machine learning, artificial intelligence, embedded security, advanced manufacturing, advanced systems models, and other technologies leading to a real-time digital systems reactor.

  • Build a strong team of innovators who will create the next level of advanced reactor technology and deploy these advanced digital smart systems.

  • Work closely with reactor design teams and will be familiar with the systems technologies required for autonomous smart digital systems in various industries.

  • Responsible for the overall human capital management of the department to include hiring staff and shaping the vision of the emergent department.  


  • Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or related field plus years related experience indicated below:
    • BS plus 12+ years experience
    • MS plus 8+ years experience
    • PhD plus 5+ years experience (preferred)
  • Related experience may include demonstrating effective technical and leadership skills, including management of technical programs, personnel management, staff recruiting, and developing and implementing strategic plans.

  • Understanding of advanced modeling technology and artificial intelligence and associated systems is expected.

  • Preference for strong understanding of and experience with design and requirements of mechanical and structural components or reactor power plants.

  • Strong preference for a history of attracting funding and establishing relationships with potential sponsors of advanced reactor designs and analysis activities, as well as development of new analytical methods and knowledge of the emerging reactor industry.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance; therefore, US citizenship is required.
