Job Description

The Reactor Systems Design & Analysis (RSD&A) Division establishes new standards of emerging, innovative reactor design through contributing technical expertise to unique and specific advanced nuclear reactor design and deployment initiatives. Through collaborative efforts, RSD&A enables research, design and implementation of lab, partner and vendor initiatives. The work of RSD&A is positioned to establish the nation as a global leader in nuclear reactor technology.

The RSD&A Division is seeking candidates to join its team as a Digital Reactor Design Engineer.


  • Works with and may lead work with a fast-paced team of reactor designers to deliver reactors that are going to set a new standard for advanced reactor design, innovation, and deployment of nuclear reactors.
  • Leads, participates, and contributes to various reactor power plant digital design activities.
  • Performs modeling and analysis to assess design options.
  • Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives.
  • Contributes to development of new capabilities within the division.
  • Plays a key role in scientific and technical products such as patents, software, journal papers, reports, and proceedings.
  • Participates in peer review work of others.
  • Interacts with internal and external partners to review and complete assignments/projects.
    • External partner contacts may include private industry and other national laboratories.
  • Takes initiative to participate in establishing organizational goals and direction and reviews plans.
  • Networks optimally with technical peer group.
  • May provide mentorship and development of junior technical staff.


  • Degree in electrical/mechanical engineering or a related field and relevant experience as follows:
    • BS plus 5-8 years experience
    • MS plus 3-6 years experience
    • PhD plus 2-4 years experience
  • Must have proven oral and written technical interpersonal skills. 
  • Expertise in one or more of the following fields is desired: instrumentation, sensors, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cyber security, control, advanced modeling, stochastic, advanced manufacturing, robotics, and other aspects of digital systems optimization and autonomous operation. 
  • Must be able to work in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Due to the nature of work performed, preference will be given to applicants with US citizenship or green card holder status.
