Patent Issued for Protective Suit Marketed to Nuclear Power Plants

Radium Incorporated (Radium) announced today it has been issued a patent (No. 7,832,396) from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a High Air Flow Powered Air Purifying Anti-Contamination Device / Suit. The suit is designed to protect the wearer from contaminates while keeping the wearer cool in hot work environments such as during nuclear power plant outages.

Radium set out on a mission to develop the ultimate personal cooling system for the nuclear power industry worker. "For decades, nuclear workers had no choice but to wear anti-contamination suits that were extremely hot and did not provide adequate protection from rips and tears. We developed a ruggedized suit with a cooling system that pumps a large volume of filtered air (HEPA) into the suit while forcing the hot air out," said Cam Abernethy, Radium Incorporated President. "The system provides true worker mobility that does not require any hoses and/or external breathing air sources."

The ensemble has been pilot tested at several Nuclear Power Plants with great success. The suit has been used for steam generator nozzle dam installation, sponge basting operations, reactor cavity decontamination activities, and several other applications.

The National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) is in the process of developing a standard for Air-fed Ensembles (42 CFR Part 84). Powered air-purifying ensembles such as our design are included in this standard. This patent gives Radium Incorporated a strategic advantage over competitors that supply devices that meet this future standard and sell them in the respiratory protection, protective clothing, and personal cooling device markets.

Lightning Bolts were developed to replace threaded fasteners in applications where quick installation and removal times are required. They also offer several other advantages such as no alignment or threading issues since ZipNut® collapsible thread technology is utilized. Threaded segments are collapsed in the installer's hand by simply squeezing the bolt in your hand (double-action of pulling and pressing against the palm of your hand). This will allow the bolt to be installed or removed quickly. Once the threaded segments are fully extended, they are locked into place and the bolt can be tightened or loosened as desired.

Warning Strobes & Lights (Battery Powered)

Reduce your unauthorized entries into High Radiation areas by utilizing Radium's Motion Detector System. Warning indicators can be triggered to flash, illuminate, or strobe BEFORE entry. Motion detectors, strobes, and flashing LEDs are battery operated! Our DC powered Light Rope Systems requires a AC power supply unit that we provide.

The design of the system is optimized for best positioning of the motion detector unit AND the best visual position of all warning indicators. This is achieved by separating the motion detector unit from the warning device. The units are connected by a cable.

Warning Message or Announcement Player (Battery Powered)

A message player is now available for our motion detector units. The player can be used independently or in conjunction with the flashing LED units and strobe lights.

Lightning Bolts can be locked into place with a standard lock-out /tag-out lock. The lock will prevent disengagement of the bolt by preventing the compression of the center shaft.

Combined with a lanyard, it will prevent rotation of the bolt from the threaded hole too.

Currently being used on steam generator primary manway shield doors, flange surface protectors, and camera mounts.
