Power Gen Names Nuclear Projects of the Year/ Companies Among Industry Best
- By April Murelio -
Smart Signal announced that Entergy Nuclear and SmartSignal received international recognition as one of 2009’s top nuclear plant projects. The Projects of the Year Annual Awards Gala, held December 7 at Power Gen in Las Vegas, Nev., honored the world’s best projects in the power generation industry.
Entergy Nuclear and SmartSignal garnered recognition as one of only three Nuclear Projects of the Year for Entergy’s use of SmartSignal at its Waterford 3 project in Louisiana. SmartSignal is an innovative predictive-diagnostic tool that develops the unique operating profile of any piece of equipment across all known loads, ambient conditions, and operating contexts. It compares actual to expected behavior and delivers exception-based intelligence of impending problems. Based on over 40 patents, SmartSignal is able to provide earlier detection of equipment deterioration than other condition-monitoring tools, thereby eliminating equipment failure to avoid surprises, unplanned outages, and excessive maintenance costs.
Entergy Nuclear started using SmartSignal after a highly successful deployment with Entergy Fossil. Among many catches, SmartSignal alerted Entergy Fossil to a crack propagating through a shaft, which saved Entergy $20-$40 million—from this one incident alone.
Entergy Nuclear installed SmartSignal at the Waterford 3 nuclear power plant as a pilot for the Entergy Nuclear fleet, the second largest nuclear fleet in the United States. SmartSignal was instrumental in early identification of multiple problems, including a condensate pump motor upper temperature rise; reactor coolant pump 1A seal pressure changes; RCP motor oil level decrease; RCP thrust bearing temperature rise; condenser silting; and various sensor failures. The project improved nuclear and radiological safety through early detection and better management of equipment degradation.
Due to the Waterford 3 success, Entergy Nuclear deployed SmartSignal to its northern nuclear facilities in 2009 as part of its Equipment Reliability Excellence Plan. It will be expanding SmartSignal fleet-wide in 2010, in addition to expanding the use of SmartSignal to more equipment, including transformers, the safety system, and cooling towers.
Entergy’s Donna Jacobs, Senior Vice President for Planning, Development and Oversight, said: “The project team is well-deserving of this recognition. Implementing predictive-analytic software at Waterford 3 yielded powerful results that launched our use of a new method to improve maintenance across the fleet. I am proud of how we have worked together to achieve these outcomes that optimize our resources, reduce risks and improve operational performance.”
Jim Gagnard, CEO, SmartSignal, added: “Entergy is an early-adopter company that is always looking for new technology-based solutions to improve their fleet reliability and availability. It is very encouraging that Power Gen has chosen to honor them for the innovative Nuclear Power project at Waterford 3.”
SmartSignal initiated predictive diagnostics for equipment health in the power generation industry and is the industry leader, with over 95 percent share of market. Its solutions protect equipment in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America—in nuclear, wind, coal, combined cycle, and hydro power plants.
Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, and it is the second-largest nuclear generator in the United States. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.7 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $13 billion and approximately 14,700 employees. www.entergy-nuclear.com.
