Unit 2 at Sweden’s Oskarshamn nuclear plant shut down safely Saturday night following a small fire in its turbine hall.Firefighters on site immediately extinguished the flames, but the reactor was left offline as plant operator Oskarshamnsverkets Kraftgrupp (OKG) investigates the incident.“Fires are always serious in this type of facility, but this happened in the conventional turbine hall, which is the same type as all other kinds of power plants, and not in the reactor itself. We need to analyze what caused the fire before we make any commitment to start the installation, but I assume that it should not be too long, because this was a relatively minor incident,” OKG spokesman Anders Österberg said. He spoke to local media later quoted by The Local, an English-language Swedish news website. The reactor was recently placed back into service following yearly maintenance, and vibrations had been recorded earlier in the turbine hall, but Österberg said it was too soon to tell if either was related to the fire. According to the World Nuclear Association, OKG operates three boiling water reactors at the site on the Baltic Sea. Unit 2 produces 605 megawatts and was put into service in 1974.OKG is owned by Fortum and E.ON Sverige.
