An 18 year old quickly found himself in the custody of police after climbing over the fence at a North Carolina nuclear plant.According to a Nuclear Regulatory Commission event report released Tuesday, plant security saw someone scale a perimeter fence at about 3:35 a.m., Sunday. A half hour later, the plant declared an unusual event – the lowest of the NRC’s emergency categories – which was called off about an hour later.Quoting local police, WBTV news reported David Hamilton Drake Jr. was arrested on suspicion of first-degree trespassing. He apparently had not tampered with anything while on plant grounds. Both 1,100 megawatt Westinghouse pressurized water reactors at the site operated at full power throughout the incident. The plant operated by Duke Energy Carolinas is located on the state’s largest man-made lake, north of Charlotte, N.C.

I think this guy is lucky he didn't get shot! Security at US Nuclear facilities has gotten much more serious since 9/11. While seemingly random or inncoent when viewed as an isolated incident, this type of thing will not be taken lightly. Had there been two or more people involved, it could have very easily become much more dangerous for them. Would like to see a follow-up on this event.
He is very lucky. Nuclear plants are athorized to use deadly force to protect the plant. Both plants I have worked at take their security very seriously.
