While reporting first-quarter earnings, Edison International indicated repairs at California’s San Onofre nuclear plant are expected to cost between $55 million and $65 million. The estimate addresses prematurely thinning tubes within steam generators that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries delivered in 2009 and 2011. In a call with analysts, executives said Edison will try to recoup costs from its warrantee with MHI.While executives noted there’s a chance both units will remain offline into the summer – which raises the threat of electricity shortages in California – Edison informed California ISO the units could return to service in June, running at reduced power. Restarting them would require approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
