Indian and Australian leaders are expected to announce negotiations on Indian uranium imports next week, India's largest English-language newspaper reported Tuesday.Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's Labor government had previously reversed a longstanding ban on uranium sales to India, which was based on its status as a non-signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The Times of India quoted unnamed government sources as saying Gillard and Indian officials will announce negotiations on a uranium safeguards agreement during her visit next week.India is second only to China in the ambition of its civilian nuclear program, with plans that have called for 14,600 megawatts of new nuclear generation on the subcontinent by 2020, according to the World Nuclear Association. As India's uranium reserves are modest, the country represents a significant market for Australian yellowcake. While Australia operates no power reactors of its own, it's estimated to have 31 percent of the world's known uranium reserves.
