B&W Announces Layoffs at Canadian Plant

Babcock & Wilcox has announced plans to lay off 90 workers at its manufacturing plant in Cambridge, Canada.

The positions amount to about 30 percent of the Ontario plant's unionized hourly workforce, the Waterloo Record reported. The layoffs will take effect in January, and a B&W spokeswoman told the newspaper that the company does not plan to transfer the jobs to other locations.

The  Cambridge plant southwest of Toronto is one of two B&W facilities in Canada, according to the company's website. It produces steam generators for the nuclear and fossil fuel industries and features the world's largest nuclear assembly clean room.

Although plans for new reactors at the Darlington nuclear plant are under consideration, final decisions on the project are months away, and the company cited a slowdown in orders as the reason for the layoffs.
