A South Carolina technical college near the Savannah River Nuclear Site is closer to realizing its fundraising goal for a new technology center following recent donations from SRS contractors.Aiken Technical College announced Thursday that Shaw Areva MOX Services donated $100,000 toward the school's new Center for Energy and Advanced Manufacturing. It will support growing programs in radiation protection technology, nuclear quality systems, welding and mechatronics. In a release, college President Susan Winsor said, “The programs to be housed in the center are critical for training the citizens of Aiken County and surrounding areas to have the skills needed to fill high-skill jobs being created in our area. This contribution helps to make significant progress toward our goal.”Last month Savannah River Nuclear Solutions promised $150,000 toward the new center, the Augusta Chronicle reported, while SRS security contractor WSI promised $60,000.According to the college, the technical center's construction will cost $8 million. The U.S. Economic Development Administration awarded the project a $2 million grant last year, which requires a $2 million match in local funds.
