TVO Announces Another Delay for New Olkiluoto Reactor

Completion of Areva's flagship EPR nuclear plant at Olkiluoto in Finland has been delayed again.

Olkiluoto 3 RPV installation. Source: ArevaOn Monday, Finnish power company Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) announced that completion of Olkiluoto 3 will likely be postponed until 2016. It also noted that instrumentation and control design "has not proceeded as planned," and further delays are possible. Areva and Siemens, which is providing the plant's turbines and generators, have not fleshed out details of the schedule beyond the new completion date, according to a TVO release. The previous schedule had the unit generating power in 2014.

Olkiluoto was slated to be the first unit of Areva's 1,600 megawatt Generation III+ nuclear plant, although it now appears that one of two EPRs under construction in Taishan, China, will now be the first. According to the World Nuclear Association, construction started at Olkiluoto 3 in 2005, with commercial operation originally planned for this year.
