An appeals court has denied an effort by the state of Massachusetts to reopen the decision to grant a license extension to the Pilgrim nuclear plant.The state's attorney general contended that the decision should have considered safety issues raised by similar boiling water reactors and spent fuel pools damaged during the Fukushima Daiichi crisis in Japan. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and its Atomic Safety and Licensing Board declined to hold a new hearing on the relicensing. On Monday, the U.S. Court of Appeals in Boston upheld that decision, the Cape Cod Times reported.Following a six-year process, the NRC granted the 20-year license extension last May, just days before the original license was set to expire. Entergy owns the single-unit Plymouth, Mass., plant, which has been in operation since the early 1970s.
