In developing advanced nuclear fuel, national lab researchers are finding novel ways to use neutron imaging to study the cracking and swelling that can occur inside fuel assemblies over time. This video gives an overview of recent energy-dispersive neutron imaging by the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center using fuel materials irradiated at the Idaho National Laboratory's Advanced Test Reactor. By analyzing the neutrons that penetrate an object, the technique gives researchers a way to see inside dense shielding materials and fuel cladding. The images also show isotope distribution.
