Plant Farley, Union Workers Reach Labor Contract

Following six weeks of negotiations, Southern Co. and Plant Farley employees represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers announced they have reached a new five-year contract.

Details of the agreement were not announced in a joint statement from the union and the utility Monday. IBEW Local 796 President Anna Jerry was quoted as saying, "We are all learning a cooperative attitude will regularly pay dividends. What is gained is not at the expense of the other, and together we cultivate teamwork."

In the same statement, Farley Site Vice President Cheryl Gayheart was quoted as saying, "I commend the leadership of the IBEW for helping to establish an environment of mutual respect necessary for the development of an agreement beneficial to our employees and the safe operation of our facility."

About 850 people work at the plant near Dothan, Ala., according to Southern. They operate two Westinghouse three-loop pressurized water reactors that each generate about 900 megawatts.

According to its most recent filing with the Internal Revenue Service, Local 796 represented 436 workers in 2013.
