Kyushu Electric in Japan restarted Unit 1 ad the Sendai nuclear power plant on Thursday after a fueling and maintenance outage that was extended to provide for a safety review requested by the prefecture governor.
The governor of Kagoshima, Satoshi Mitazono, had campaigned with an anti-nuclear power platform. As governor, he then requested that Kyushu voluntarily close the Sendai nuclear power plant, which includes two of the three currently operating reactors in the country. He later compromised by accepting a deal in which additional inspections would be made during re-fueling outages.
Sendai Unit 1 was expected to reach criticality on Friday and commence generation on Sunday with commercial operations scheduled to commence on Jan 6.
