Russian nuclear power giant Rosatom said Wednesday that construction had officially begun on the Bushehr Unit 2 nuclear power plant in Iran.
The official start date for construction is March 14, 2017. The date was marked by a formal ceremony in Iran attended by Rosatom representatives and Iranian officials, according to Russian news agency TASS.
Contracts for the Bushehr project were signed by the Nuclear Power Production and Development Company of Iran and Rosatom's export division Atomstroiexportin November 2014. The contracts covered construction of two new Bushehr units, Nos. 2 and 3, using WWER-1000 technology for a total generation capacity of 2,100 megawatt.
Construction on both units is expected to take 10 years with Unit 2's time line aiming for an October 2024 start, while Unit 3's time line calls for a startup in April 2026.
