Chinese media reported Tuesday that the first jointly-designed Hualong One nuclear reactor, a third-generation reactor design with contributions from the China General Nuclear Power Group and the China National Nuclear Corporation, had successfully completed all of its pre-operations testing on Monday.
The tests were completed at the Sichuan province site in southwest China. The tests for Unit 5 at the plant follow the successful hydraulic pressure tests for a demonstration model of the CAP-1400 pressurized water reactor, an upgraded version of the Westinghouse AP-1000 reactor, which was completed in March. The Hualong One reactor, one of two prototypes under development at the Fuqing nuclear power plant, underwent hydraulic pressure tests in April, comprising Units 5 and 6 at the plant. The CAP-1400 reactor is the plant's Unit 4.
The 1200MW Hualong One reactor at the Fuqing, produced by the Dongfang Electric Machinery Co Ltd., underwent a series of tests (about 30 different tests) in the past four days.
In April 2015, the government approved the use of Hualong One technology to build two reactors unit 5 and 6 in Fuqing nuclear power plant in Fujian province. The same technology is under development for Units 3 and 4 of Fangchenggang nuclear project in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and for two new reactors in Karachi, Pakistan.
