Olkiluoto Unit 3 Completes Hot Functional Testing

The long-delayed Unit 3 at Finland’s Olkiluoto NPP (OL3) power plant is a step closer to start up with hot functional testing completed in May, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) said in a statement.

Olkiluoto NPPThe testing, which took about five months and included about 200 operation simulations, was completed by 30 May, the power company said.

Hot functional tests for the 1600MWe reactor were done with the system experiencing the pressure and temperature of a plant in operations, but it is done without the reactor core operating.

Cold testing was completed a year ago in June.

TVO said the unit would be ready to begin commercial operations in May 2019 following the next steps that include a safety review by Finnish regulators, fuel loading and testing post-criticality that will begin with initial assessments of the plant at low power, while operators eventually bring the unit up to full power.

Fuel loading is expected to start sometime this fall, TVO said.
