Belene Units 1 & 2

Output:            953MWe

Location:         7.5km from the border of Romania and near the Danube River, in the Republic of Bulgaria

In the News:    Belene Units 1 & 2

1981               site was approved for the construction of a second Bulgarian NPP

1987               foundations of the future power plant were laid

1988 – 1990    40% of the construction work of reactor 1 was finished and 
                      
80% of the equipment was supplied

1990               project abandoned due to the restoration of capitalism in Bulgaria

2002               re-start of the Belene Project

2003               letters sent to six leading companies in the sphere of nuclear energy asking them
                      to provide up-to-date technical, economic and financial information regarding the project

July 2003         program work approved

2005               National Electric Company (NEC) launched a procedure for selection of a Contractor for the
                      engineering, procurement, and commissioning of Belene Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1 & 2

2006               use of third-generation VVER-1000/V-446B reactors was approved by the NEC

2007               European Commission gave its favorable opinion to the NPP

January 2008   NEC signed contract for the design, construction and installation of units 1 and 2

September 2008 construction of the Belene NPP officially started

May 2009        concrete scheduled to be poured

June 2010       Bulgarian government announced that it would freeze indefinitely the planned construction
                      of the Belene nuclear power plant

2013               Belene 1 expected to be operating

2014               Belene 2 expected to be operating
