Patent Issued for Protective Suit Marketed to Nuclear Power Plants

Radium Incorporated (Radium) announced today it has been issued a patent (No. 7,832,396) from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a High Air Flow Powered Air Purifying Anti-Contamination Device / Suit. The suit is designed to protect the wearer from contaminates while keeping the wearer cool in hot work environments such as during nuclear power plant outages.

Radium set out on a mission to develop the ultimate personal cooling system for the nuclear power industry worker. "For decades, nuclear workers had no choice but to wear anti-contamination suits that were extremely hot and did not provide adequate protection from rips and tears. We developed a ruggedized suit with a cooling system that pumps a large volume of filtered air (HEPA) into the suit while forcing the hot air out," said Cam Abernethy, Radium Incorporated President. "The system provides true worker mobility that does not require any hoses and/or external breathing air sources."

The ensemble has been pilot tested at several Nuclear Power Plants with great success. The suit has been used for steam generator nozzle dam installation, sponge basting operations, reactor cavity decontamination activities, and several other applications.

The National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) is in the process of developing a standard for Air-fed Ensembles (42 CFR Part 84). Powered air-purifying ensembles such as our design are included in this standard. This patent gives Radium Incorporated a strategic advantage over competitors that supply devices that meet this future standard and sell them in the respiratory protection, protective clothing, and personal cooling device markets.
