Constellation Energy’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Recognized for Safety Program by Occupational Safety and Health Administration

Constellation Energy announced that its Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in Scriba, N.Y., has been recognized for its outstanding safety program by achieving STAR status under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP). STAR is the highest safety designation given by OSHA and the federal government.
Nine Mile Point’s employees will celebrate the achievement in a ceremony tomorrow, along with OSHA officials and local leaders. The ceremony will include presentation of the VPP STAR flag by Mike Levy, OSHA’s New York State VPP manager.
“This is a significant accomplishment for our station and a credit to all of our employees who continuously demonstrate their personal commitment to safety,” said Keith Polson, vice president, Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station. “A safe workplace is built through the daily commitment and focus of each and every worker.”
OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program is a cooperative effort among companies, their workers and OSHA to ensure safer workplaces. By designating safely operating facilities such as Nine Mile Point as VPP sites, OSHA officially recognizes the efforts of employers and employees for building and maintaining exemplary occupational safety and health programs. Of the seven million private industries in the country, only 1,100 are approved for the VPP. Approved facilities are designated in one of three categories, with STAR as the highest. Nine Mile Point is now among the approximately 100 STAR facilities in New York State.
Applications for OSHA recognition are accepted from various work sites and assessed based on established VPP standards for a managed safety and health system. Applicants are verified through a review process that includes a thorough on-site evaluation performed by OSHA safety and health experts.
Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station has a multi-faceted health and safety program with a strong level of employee engagement and ownership. The station has two employee-led committees which contribute to safety improvements and initiatives.
There are four facilities within Constellation Energy’s generation fleet which have achieved STAR status, including all three of its nuclear power plants.
