The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has assigned Charles Peabody as the new resident inspector at the Wolf Creek nuclear plant in Burlington, Ks. The plant is operated by Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp.
“Charles Peabody’s technical and regulatory experience will assist the NRC in carrying out its mission of protecting people and the environment and ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants,” said NRC Region IV Administrator Elmo E. Collins.
Peabody joined the agency’s Region II office in Atlanta, Ga., in 2003, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in nuclear and radiological engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has worked in the Region II Division of Reactor Safety, performing engineering inspections.
Each U.S. commercial nuclear plant has at least two NRC resident inspectors. They serve as the agency's eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public. Resident Inspectors can be assigned to any one site for up to seven years. Peabody joins NRC Senior Resident Inspector Chris Long at the plant.
The Wolf Creek resident inspectors can be reached at (620)-364-8653.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has assigned Mahdi Hayes as resident inspector at the Columbia Generating Station. The plant, located 10 miles north of Richland, Wash., is operated by Energy Northwest.
“Mahdi Hayes’ technical and regulatory experience will assist the NRC in carrying out its mission of protecting people and the environment and ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants,” said NRC Region IV Administrator Elmo E. Collins.
Hayes joined the NRC’s Region IV office in 2006 as a Reactor Engineer in the agency’s Nuclear Safety Professional Development Program. Prior to joining the agency, he worked as a Nuclear Engineer for Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. Hayes received his bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University in 2005.
Hayes will join Senior Resident Inspector Ron Cohen at the site.

She is a graduate of the NRC’s Nuclear Safety Professional Development Program, a two-year training program that provides specialized training in nuclear safety and a broad perspective of NRC regulatory activities. Jones also completed a rigorous NRC inspector qualification program. Most recently, she was assigned as a reactor inspector in the Region I Division of Reactor Safety, performing engineering inspections.
“Heather Jones has the training and commitment to safety that will help the NRC carry out its mission of protecting people and the environment, and ensure the safe operation of Vermont Yankee,” said NRC Region I Administrator Samuel J. Collins.
