Browns Ferry Unit 3 in Forced Outage

- Edited By Tom Lamar -

Browns Ferry nuclear power plant - Unit 3 remained shut down on Tuesday, two days after workers noticed high vibration on its Generator Exciter inboard and outboard journal bearings.

Browns Ferry is owned by Tennessee Valley Authority, the nation's largest public utility.

About 4 p.m. Sunday, operators noticed the vibration at the turbine that generates electricity. Operators lowered the output of the nuclear reactor and when the vibrating continued, the TVA workers shut down the unit.

This year, Browns Ferry has had two other unplanned shut downs because of technical issues. TVA shut down Unit 2 from June 9-11 and shut down Unit 3 from Aug. 12-18, Golden said.

Golden says there's no word on when the unit will return to service.
