Peach Bottom unit 3 is back online after a 34-day refueling outage that also saw a range of other inspections and maintenance.With the help of 2,500 temporary workers, Exelon replaced 1/3 of the unit’s fuel and performed more than 15,000 inspections and maintenance tasks, according to the company. The reactor was restarted Saturday night and was operating at 68 percent power Monday.“We completed a host of maintenance activities and equipment upgrades that will help us run the plant safely and more efficiently for many years to come,” site vice president Tom Dougherty said in a release.Upgrades to safety systems and the unit’s low-pressure turbines were among the work completed.Exelon runs two reactors at Peach Bottom near Lancaster, Pa. Both are General Electric Type 4 boiling water reactors with Mark I containment first licensed in the early 1970s, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Together, they produce 2,200 megawatts electric.
