Alert Caused By High Levels of Carbon Monoxide Cancelled at Point Beach Nuclear Plant

The Point Beach nuclear power plant declared an Alert at 9:06 pm CT on April 25 due to high levels of carbon monoxide in an area adjacent to the diesel generator, according to an NRC release. Normal atmosphere was restored within 15 minutes and the plant terminated the Alert at 11:14 pm CT.

The two-unit plant is operated by NextEra Energy Point Beach LLC and is located in Two Rivers, Wisc., roughly 13 miles northeast of Manitowoc.

“NRC resident inspectors at the plant and staff in the regional office verified that the event did not result in injuries to workers and did not compromise public health and safety,” said Cynthia Pederson, Acting Regional Administrator for NRC Region III office in Lisle, Ill.

During a maintenance test of the emergency diesel generator, some diesel exhaust got drawn back into the ventilation system causing the concentration of carbon monoxide to exceed allowable levels in a room adjacent to the diesel. The diesel generator was stopped and carbon monoxide was ventilated. The licensee is looking into the causes of the event. Both units remain at full power.
