A protest opposing the relicensing of Massachusetts’ Pilgrim nuclear plant ended with the arrest of 14 activists who walked through the gate attempting to deliver a letter to a plant vice president.About 30 people gathered on the plant’s access road Sunday afternoon, the Plymouth Daily News reported. Organized by the anti-nuclear group Cape Downwinders, the protestors sought the plant’s decommissioning and the relocation of spent fuel from the reactor’s storage pool to dry casks. Following speeches and a brief standoff with police and plant security, 14 were arrested trying to enter the facility, according to the Daily News.Entergy’s Pilgrim plant operates a single 685 megawatt General Electric boiling water reactor, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Its license expires next month, although the agency will allow the plant to continue operating until the NRC reaches a decision on a long-delayed relicensing application. While the NRC staff recently recommended relicensing for the plant, it still faces appeals from environmental groups and a challenge filed in a federal appeals court by the Massachusetts attorney general.
