Loss of offsite power tripped the reactor at New Jersey's Oyster Creek nuclear plant early Monday morning.At 3:29 a.m., safety systems functioned as designed and automatically shut down the reactor from full power, according to an event report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. While external power was out, two emergency diesel generators provided auxiliary power and the plant declared an unusual event, the lowest of the NRC's emergency classifications, that ended about two hours later. The isolation condenser provided decay heat removal.Exelon operates the single-unit plant 60 miles east of Philadelphia. In a release, the company said it ended the unusual event after Jersey Central Power & Light crews corrected the offsite power problem.The unit, first licensed in 1969, is a 619 megawatt General Electric type 2 boiling water reactor with Mark 1 containment, according to the NRC.
